The odd little menagerie

A rotating cast of hand-built creatures — fresh from the kiln, and each one odd in its own way.

A chartreuse ceramic frog with big pink-rimmed eyes, a pink bellflower cap, pastel star spots, and two pairs of pink, peach, and cream butterfly wings, sitting on a weathered wooden deck.

Saving pennies, casting spells — a piggy-bank frog made for a new little bean, with butterfly wings, a bellflower hat, and a few stars for luck.

Meet the maker

I use my hands to express what's in my head. From my studio in rural Perry County, Pennsylvania — under a big painted sun — I hand-build ceramic creatures one pinch and coil at a time.

Frogs, griffins, horned beetles — some come from nature, some from old stories, and some just show up a little odd. Every piece is built and glazed entirely by hand, so no two are ever quite the same. If it makes you smile and tilt your head, that's exactly the point.
